About Allison Cotton, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor Allison Cotton, who teaches her “true passion” of criminology at Metropolitan State College of Denver, wants her students to stop and think. For instance, the purpose of her course, Crime, Criminal Justice and the Media, is to teach students about “spin” so as to awaken these future judges, lawyers and law enforcement officers—people who will make life-impacting decisions—to the often hidden stereotypes and judgments the media perpetuates through its choice of which facts to present.

Widely published in her field, Cotton’s books address such controversial issues as race and justice, death row and abusive relationships. Her latest textbook, Effigy: Images of Capital Defendants (Issues of Crime and Justice) (Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, July 2008), is available on www.amazon.com.

With a doctorate in sociology from the University of Colorado-Boulder, Cotton’s experience as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention will be a case study in human behavior.
